Mycelium Art: Decorating your house with mushrooms?
Mushrooms for dinner – that’s a big yes!
But hanging them on the wall? Well that’s a big yes too!
The part of the mushroom that we eat, the carpophore has some great properties, tasty, full of vitamins and beneficial for your health.
The part that we don’t eat, the mycelium also has some pretty amazing properties. I use these properties to help me grow my range of of mycelium artwork, or “MycoArt“.
What is mycelium?
Have you ever lifted the bark off a piece of rotting wood and found a mass of white filaments? That’s mycelium.
It’s the root like structure of the mushroom and has a key role in supporting mushroom growth by digesting organic matter into sources of food the mushroom can use to grow.
As the mycelium grows through organic matter it naturally binds it together and I use that property to create my MycoArt pieces.

How do you make objects from mycelium?
I mix mycelium with natural hemp fibres and pack them into re-usable moulds. The mycelium will grow, knitting together the hemp in the shape of the mold.
Under the correct conditions the outer surfaces will form a velvety soft skin in neutral shades varying from white to brown. After removal from the mold the mycelium is dried to inactivate the mycelium and stop any further growth.
The resulting material is light but solid, interesting to touch and aesthetically pleasing. I incorporate this velvety skin into my artwork either in forms that emphasise its natural differences in colour and finish or as a type of “canvas” where I laser engrave delicate drawings of mushrooms.
